Make Ember Months Accident Free, FRSC Urges Drivers
Uyo- The Federal Roads Safety Corps(FRSC) in Akwa Ibom has urged drivers in the state to ensure accident-free “Ember months’’ this year.
Mr Godsgift Uwen, the state Public Relations Officer of the commission, said this in an interview with the newsmen in Uyo.
He said that accidents did not just happened but that people were their root causes.
Uwen said there was nothing wrong with the so called “ember months’’ except that drivers were always reckless and impatient.
“There is a myth that the so-called `ember months’ are a period associated with demonic activities on the roads.
“That is, demons are responsible for fatal accidents on the road during the periods of September to December.
“The just-concluded public enlightenment campaigns were aimed at disabusing the minds of the public from such false myths.
“The truth of the matter is that we, human beings, are the root causes of accidents on our roads.
The PRO pointed out that during this period, drivers were so anxious to make more profit to the detrinment of their passengers.
According to Uwem, offences related to this season include overloading because people are desperate to travel and the traffic volume is always very high.
He warned drivers against setting unrealistic targets for themselves during the ember period, adding that this was another cause of road accident.
He also appealed to drivers and vehicle owners to always put their vehicles in good condition to avoid unnecessary breakdown on the road.
Uwen said that officers of the corps had been trained to be very friendly, fair but firm in their judgment, and would always do their best while on patrol.
Reports says that the FRSC had between Sept. 10 and 15, conducted sensitisation campaigns for drivers toward accident-free “ember months’’.
