‘Schools should enlighten pupils on road safety’

The Head Teacher, WalkTall International School, Mr. Abiodun Onikoyi, has called on school heads to educate their pupils on road safety including signs, symbols, rules and regulation.

At the school outing held recently, Onikoyi said educating pupils would help eradicate accident and enlighten pupils on road safety measures.

He said, “The importance of road safety cannot be over-emphasised as there is increase in road accident everyday and as long as individual either young or old ply the road, it’s necessary for them to be properly enlightened on road safety guidelines.

“WalkTall International School takes safety very seriously which prompted the school to embark on the excursion for pupils to have first hand information on these safety measures,” he said.

The Staff Officer, Public Education Sector Command, FRSC, Lagos, Mrs. Vivian Akaeze, stressed the need for the government to include road safety education in the school curricular.

She said the need to receive a formal road safety education in an educational environment outside the school was also an effective means of road safety training.

She said, “There is need to understand some basic facts and precautions we need to watch out for in our ever busy roads to avoid the unexpected and parental involvement is invaluable to model and reinforce road safety behaviour.”
